Some enemies of the United States disparagingly call America “the Great Satan.” They do so because they believe that what America does around the world is Satan’s work and has the largest capacity to do so. After all, America has almost a thousand military bases around the world located in sovereign nations, many against their will. Whether or not you agree with the term “the Great Satan,” as Christians, we must take into consideration what Scripture says about the matter.
Jesus and the New Testament authors make it very clear that Satan rules America as its god. For many, this is a completely shocking claim, yet Scripture is crystal clear. Satan is the god of America. If this isn’t something you’re familiar with, you should read more about it here before reading any further.
Since Satan is the god of America, since Satan rules over America, and since all government leaders must worship Satan to obtain the positions they have… the term “the Great Satan” doesn’t seem very inaccurate. Whether you agree with it or not, all American Christians must learn how to live in a powerful empire ruled by Satan. This is a guide.
Understand America’s Master Plan
Satan has a master plan for America, just as he has had for every powerful empire that came before it. Scripture tells us that Satan comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Since Satan is the god of America we should expect the nation to carry out his will. We should see America stealing, killing, and destroying. That is exactly what we see.
America steals for Satan. Like many empires, America was founded by murdering nearly an entire people group and stealing virtually all their land. Just about every single treaty made with the Native Americans was broken by America. Nothing could stand in the way of Satan’s nation from taking all the land they wanted.

America kills for Satan. The genocide of Native Americans to this day was the largest genocide in human history. Though the killing didn’t stop there. America has been at war around the world for 224 of the 241 years it has been a nation. That is 93%. Satan’s nation has been killing people all over the world for 93% of its existence.

America destroys for Satan. 224 years of war has lead to untold destruction around the world. America is the only nation on earth to use an atomic bomb on a civilian population and it has done so twice. Entire cities have been left in shambles in the wake of the American war machine. Satan’s nation has turned destruction into an art form.

All one must do is notice the continuity of American foreign policy regardless of the administration’s stated policy of the time. It doesn’t ever change because someone else is really in charge. The god of America and his military-industrial complex are not partisan. The killing, the stealing, and the destroying must go on because this is Satan’s most powerful nation. America creates myths about “fighting for freedom” in order to justify carrying out Satan’s will but those who align themselves with Christ’s nation will be able to see through these deceptions.
Learn That You Are Not an American Citizen
Accepting that America belongs to Satan can be quite difficult for Christians who don’t fully understand their true identity. Many American Christians continue to cling to a false identity and proclaim their patriotism for a nation that Satan is the god of. This misplaced patriotism is detrimental to the Gospel message and robs it of nearly all of its power. A vital key to living a Godly life in Satan’s nation is to understand that you are not one of its citizens.
Followers of Jesus are “born again” into Christ’s nation: the Kingdom of God. The Gospel is centered on the Kingdom. The good news for those living in a nation that belongs to Satan is that a new nation has arrived where Jesus is King. While Satan is the god of America, Jesus is the God of the Kingdom. If you are in Christ, you are a new creation, the old has gone (2 Corinthians 5:17). You are now a citizen of the Kingdom, Christ’s nation (Philippians 3:20). You are no longer an American citizen.
For though we live in [america], we do not wage war as [america] does.
2 Corinthians 10:3
The Gospel (good news) is that you can be saved from your former citizenship in Satan’s nation, America. Because you are now a citizen of God’s Kingdom you are a foreigner and an exile in America (1 Peter 2:11). You are a stranger in Satan’s nation (Hebrews 11:13). It is easier to not get wrapped up in patriotism for America when you understand that in Christ you are a foreigner in Satan’s empire (1 Peter 1:17).

Understand Your Mission
We know that the whole world is under the control of Satan but we also know that Jesus loves and died for every single person (1 John 5:19, John 3:16). This puts citizens of the Kingdom of God in a unique position of understanding that all people need rescuing. Jesus as made you an ambassador for God’s Kingdom in the worldly nation you live as an exile and foreigner in (2 Corinthians 5:20). Just as God regards Satan’s nations as worthless and less than nothing, so we should also (Isaiah 40:17).
The good news we bring as ambassadors to Satan’s citizens is that Jesus can save us out of the bondage of deception. This salvation is found in the Kingdom of God. We preach the Kingdom as an alternative to America, not as a supplement.
Jesus said, “I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God to the other towns because that is why I was sent.”
Your mission as a citizen of Christ’s nation is to preach the Kingdom, as Jesus did. There is nothing that Jesus talked about more than the Kingdom of God and citizenship in it. The same should be true of us (1 John 2:6). But for our Gospel message to have any power we must preach it as an alternative to America. Jesus preached the Gospel of the Kingdom as the alternative and rival to Rome. We must preach the Gospel of the Kingdom as the alternative and rival to America. It got Jesus killed so it may get us killed as well.
Accept That America Will Reject You
A Christian living in America is going to be making a lot of enemies if they are going around claiming that they are not American citizens and that Satan rules the nation. This is why Jesus says that those who give their full allegiance to him and his nation may even find themselves at odds with their family (Matthew 10:34-38). But, inversely, anyone who gives their allegiance to a pagan nation like America becomes an enemy of God.
Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
American Christians must ask themselves, do they want to be enemies of God or enemies of America? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of America becomes an enemy of God. Rejecting the politics of empire will make America hate you just like Jesus was hated. The way of Jesus is a threat to the Satanic systems of power that America needs to survive.
If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me [Jesus] first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
Know Who Your Enemy Is and Isn’t
Followers of Jesus in America should be making a lot of enemies, not by desire but by design. As Jesus says, it is because you are no longer of America (John 15:18-19). But while Satan’s nation will view you as their enemy, we know from Scripture that the people themselves are not our enemy. Though we do indeed have enemies:
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Christians should regard America as worthless and less than nothing, as God does, but also regard its citizens as worth dying for, as God does (Isaiah 40:17, John 3:16).
Our enemy is never other people. Our fight is never with human beings. People that you may be tempted to label your enemy are made in the image of God. Those people are people that Jesus died for, just like he died for you. Jesus loves those who you are tempted to call your enemy just as much as he loves you. Jesus tells us that all people are our neighbors that we should love as he does (Luke 10:25-37).
Instead of people, our fight is against pagan gods, the spiritual powers that animate the evils in this world: including empires like America. Scripture says we must “be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8). The god of America is described as a lion who prowls around. The god of America is our true enemy.

Use the Correct Weapons and Armor
The god of America holds the power of death. It is actually our fear of death that makes us slaves to his will (Hebrews 2:14-15). Fear of death leads us to devalue other people’s lives over our own. On the world stage, this leads to war, which satisfies Satan’s cravings for death and destruction (John 8:44). It is Satan’s deceptions that cause us to fear death and therefore carry around physical weapons like guns. But Paul warns us that Christians do not use physical weapons (2 Corinthians 10:3-4). Instead, followers of Christ use spiritual weapons and put on spiritual armor precisely because our true enemies are spiritual (Ephesians 6:11-17).
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
2 Corinthians 10:4
Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
As soon as we pick up and use a physical weapon of the world we confuse who our true enemy is. Since our enemy is never flesh and blood, a gun is never the correct weapon. When we use weapons of the world we defy the commands of Jesus who tells us to love all people, including those who are our “enemies” (Luke 6:27-36). Using weapons that can kill other people makes Satan our father instead of God (John 8:39-44).
Pray For Satan’s Kings
We learn from Christ’s story of being tempted in the wilderness that Satan holds all authority over all the nations of the world. We also learn that Satan gives out some of this authority to anyone who worships him (Luke 4:5-7). That means that everyone who has power in government has to worship Satan in some way in order to maintain their position. Knowingly or unknowingly, everyone who has power in government has to, and does, worship Satan. The very enemies that Paul warns us about in Ephesians 6:12 are the puppeteers behind the puppets in government. Even though these men and women have become children of Satan—they are themselves victims and we are told to pray for them.
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority…
1 Timothy 2:1-2
All those in political power who have gained their authority from Satan—those people are people we should pray for. We detest them and what they do, but we are still to pray for them. No one must be excluded from our prayers or from our appeal to God’s love for them. It might seem completely crazy, but there were some German Christians who were in the resistance movement against Hitler, even to the point of plotting his overthrow, and who still engaged in prayer for him. We cannot want the absolute death of political foes.
Every government leader is our political foe because they are false rulers.
Certainly, it should not be our prayer that they remain in power, that they win victories, or that they endure. It should be a prayer for their conversion, that they change the way they behave and act, that they renounce violence and tyranny, that they become truthful. We must pray for them and not against them. In faith, we must also pray for their salvation from Satan’s nation and into the Kingdom. This prayer must still be made even if from a human standpoint there is no hope of change. We must not forget that these passages on prayer for kings were probably written at the very moment of the first Christian persecution under Nero.
Perhaps we should model Christ’s prayer on the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34).
Do Not Participate In Pagan Politics
America presents its citizens with two political parties to choose from. Every four years, America’s citizens seemingly get to choose between two political leaders to elect as president. This presents the Christian with several problems.
It does not matter who gets elected as president because whoever it may be will continue to uphold America’s Satanic foreign policy of domination, intimidation, and oppression. It does not matter who gets elected because that person, no matter who they are, must be worshiping Satan in order to become president. It does not matter who gets elected because that person has no right to rule over other human beings. Jesus tells us that in his Kingdom, no one should have authority over another.
Both red and blue, liberal and conservative, are political rivals of Jesus.
Many American Christians will justify participating in the pagan politics of Satan’s nation by claiming they are voting for “the lesser of two evils.” The problem is that the lesser evil is still evil. Choosing “the lesser of two evils” is buying into the deception that there are only two choices to begin with. If the world is ever to believe that Jesus is a viable option, then Christians living in America must refuse to vote for anyone else. You already have a president and his name is Jesus Christ.
Defect From America
Satan’s nation is a sinking ship, just like every other empire before it. Scripture tells us that God’s Kingdom will destroy and replace them all (Daniel 2:44). Now—not tomorrow, not next week—now is the best time to defect from Satan’s nation. If you still have not stepped into your true identity as a follower of Jesus, now is the time to renounce your pagan citizenship in Satan’s nation and step into Christ’s Kingdom.
Jesus sends us out into the world like sheep among the wolves while Satan prowls around like a lion (Matthew 10:16, 1 Peter 5:8). We must not allow our minds to be conformed by America but rather be shaped by God’s Kingdom and the way of Jesus (Romans 12:2). Satan is the god of this age, but Jesus is the God of the ages (1 Timothy 1:17). Jesus has secured the victory against the god of America (Hebrews 2:14).
Having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
The god of America has been disarmed. Satan’s deceptions can no longer stand amidst the truth of Jesus. Romans 16:20 says that Jesus will soon crush Satan under your feet. Satan’s complete defeat is further solidified every day that more and more Christians reject the ways of Satan and his nation and live under the rulership of Jesus.
Does America do Satan’s work? Absolutely. Does America deserve to be called “the Great Satan”?
